What is an SYNVISC injection?

SYNVISC injection is a visco-supplement injection that supplements the fluid found in your knee, providing lubrication and cushioning the joint so that your knee pain caused by osteoarthritis can be alleviated. Three injections provide pain relief for a period of six months.

SYNVISC is a gel-like mixture that is made from a substance known as hyaluronan, which comes from chicken combs. Hyaluronan is also a natural substance that is found in the human body. It is available in very high amounts in the joints where it acts as a natural shock absorber, while also lubricating it. As such, hyaluronan is essential for the joints to work properly.

What is the procedure like?

SYNVISC injections should be administered by a specialist such as an orthopaedic surgeon. The procedure is fairly simple, but it is imperative that an experienced and trained professional carries it out to avoid complications.

The procedure will take just a few minutes and is done in the doctor’s office. You will be given a numbing agent so that you won’t feel any pain when the solution is injected into your knee. Your doctor will carefully administer the injection directly to your knee.

You will have to receive one injection each week over the course of three weeks, which means that by the end of your treatment, you would have taken three SYNVINC injections in total. This will provide you with pain relief for the next six months.

After you have received the injections, you can go home without having to stay in the hospital or clinic overnight. To prevent any kind of swelling and pain, it is recommended that you apply ice on your knee and rest it for some time after the injections. Moreover, for the next 48 hours, make sure to avoid strenuous physical activities that put a lot of pressure on your knees such as jogging and high-impact sports.

Even though you may feel a difference after the first injection itself, it is important that you take all three injections to get the maximum benefits. Even though every patient is different and responds to the injections in their own time, most experience the greatest pain relief about 8 to 12 weeks after their first injection.
